Galaxidi
The Galaxidi of the legendary captains is the historical continuation of the ancient city of Oianthia. It is located near Itea, Chrissos and Delphi. It is built on the northern coast of the Chrissian (Corinthian) Gulf and since 1978 it has been classified as a traditional settlement. Along with Chryssos, it belongs to the few places in Greece that has kept the color and aroma of tradition.
At the time when sails and sails ruled the seas it was renowned for its navy, its wealth and the seamanship of its inhabitants. In 1780 it was one of the busiest Greek ports, a gateway to Central Greece for trade with the Peloponnese and a station for storing and handling products. Galaxidian ships carried out transport and trade in all the major ports of the Mediterranean, and Galaxidian shipowners maintained businesses with a developed economic understanding, such as shipyards and a marine self-insurance system. Many Galaxidian ships and Galaxidians took part in the liberation struggle of 1821.
Today the Galaxidi port has developed into a great tourist and holiday resort. With many "opportunities" for entertainment and accommodation, the promenade offers many options in cafes, taverns and restaurants waiting to serve visitors.
Also nowadays, Galaxidi is famous for the custom of flour smearing, at noon on Clean Monday the inhabitants gather at the port equipped with bags of flour and paint and engage in battles among themselves.
