Prophet Ilias Monastery

The monastery of Prophet Ilias has been a part of Chrisso for almost 1000 years. A "hodget" and a patriarchal seal allow us to place its creation in 1019 AD. It is built at an altitude of 400 meters and overlooks the entire Krisseo field. You see the largest part of the Chrissaitic olive grove (Amfissa olive grove), the Chrissian (Corinthian) gulf, Itea, Galaxidi and the opposite mountains of the Peloponnese.

Due to its strategic location and the patriotism of the monks, it played an important role in the preparation and during the revolution of 1821. Thirty fathers lost their lives fighting the Ottoman dynasty in the battle of Chalkomata. On March 24, 1821, the Bishop of Salona Isaias, Panourias, the local leaders with them and the captain Koutrombogiannos from Chrissos, raised the banner of the revolution in solid Greece in the catholicon of the only one.

In 1825 the Turks besieged it and destroyed the temple. Which was again built bigger in 1834. In 1943 the Italians set fire to it. The legend says that Ai Lias protected the catholicon from the flames.
